UNIVERSAL CHILDREN’S DAY WILL BE POPPING IN BRIXTON
To commemorate Universal Children’s Day on 20th November, Youth in Excellence will be hosting a free arts and performance based event at Pop Brixton, Lambeth. (49 Brixton Station Road, London SW9 8PQ)
Youth in Excellence, a London-based social enterprise, ran a competition for 11 to 19-year-olds earlier in the year on the theme of identity and the best entries were selected to be featured in the organisation’s first book entitled ‘Identity – The Anthology’ which they self-published in June.
Kay Oldroyd, director of Youth in Excellence, said “The content and quality of the poems that we received was outstanding. What struck us was the maturity in which these young people tackled issues such as mental health; special needs; race; family; immigration and societal stereotypes.”
With the theme of identity continuing, this will be the focus for November’s event which will be hosted by the charismatic duo Solomon and Mahamed of Brixton Soup Kitchen who are also one of the Community Sponsors. During the day, the competition winners will share their winning poems with the audience and receive their prizes. There will be guest speakers including Kazeem from UK RnB group Rough Copy (X-Factor), beat-boxing and singing performances, games, giveaways and the launch of the 2016 poetry competition.
“At a time where there is international concern and many conversations taking place about identity, immigration and refugees, we’re excited to be able to bring people together in a way that celebrates the richness and diversity of our communities.” said Medina Harrison, Project Manager
The Universal Children’s Day event will run from 11am – 2.30pm. Free tickets for schools, youth groups, community organisations etc are available from www.youthinexcellence.com
The book ‘Identity – The Anthology’ is on sale at www.youthinexcellence.com/anthology for £8.96. Organisations, schools and charities who wish to order 15 or more copies will receive a discount.
